Flaxseed Oil - Depression

Flaxseed Oil can be very helpful for Depression, ADHD, Stress, Bi-Polar Disorder, and even schizophrenia.

Everyone needs omega 3 fatty acids in their diet, and the Standard American Diet (SAD) provides very little. These Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are typically found in certain types of fish and walnuts, but are extremely abundant in flaxseed oil.

There is evidence to show that people who are suffering from depression can derive great benefit from increasing the amount of omega 3 in their diet.

Some remarkable studies conducted by scientists have shown that the type of fat a person eats is in fact linked to their state of mind. This is why there are potentially great benefits to be gained from taking flaxseed oil for depression.

To understand this concept, it is necessary to have a little knowledge of how the human brain is composed. For our purposes here, this will be in the most basic terms, as much of the brains abilities and functions are still a mystery! However this is what we do know;

The human brain contains about 60% fat, but this isn't the type of fat we dislike so much when it clings to our stomach, thighs or buttocks! It is a structural fat which forms three dimensional membranes and controls cellular function.

The nerve cells in the brain are also very rich in omega three fatty acids containing five times more than found in red blood cells. Our modern western diet is usually very low in omega 3 fatty acids and the nerve cells in people suffering from depression can be starved of this essential fat as a result.

As omega 3 is a type of building block for the brain, it can be equally beneficial when treating depression as drugs.

The research into the effect of omega 3 on mental health was started in the 1980's by Dr. Donald O. Rudin, the former director of the Department of Molecular Biology at Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute. He experimented with flaxseed oil for depression and other mental disorders, giving forty four patients in his clinical trial two or three tablespoons per day.

The results were remarkable, in some cases he noticed a marked improvement in their mood and the depression was lifted within two hours of ingesting the flaxseed oil. Six to eight weeks later most of them had more energy, were sleeping better and were less depressed. When Dr Rubin exchanged the omega 3 for omega 6, which is prevalent in modern western diets, their symptoms returned.

If you wish to increase the amount of omega 3 in your diet, taking flaxseed oil supplements are one of the most convenient ways to do so. Flax Oil can be mixed into cottage cheese, smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, salad dressings and many other foods.

Barlean's has a awesome new line of flax oil products called Barlean's Omega Swirl. These are available in a variety of flavors, and with several flax oil blends to choose from, you can easily get your desired intake of borage oil, evening primose oil, and fish oil too.

These delicious flax oil supplements taste so great, they do not need to be mixed with anything. Just take a tablespoon or two per day and this will increase your intake of the much needed omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Note: NEVER HEAT FLAXSEED OIL because heat will destroy the nutrients and literally change the molecular structure of this healthy fat, changing it into an unhealthy fat.

So, if you are unlucky enough to be one of the many people who suffer from depression or ADHD, and would like to try flaxseed oil as a dietary supplement, you should first  consult your health care provider and make sure it won't conflict with any of your prescribed medication.
